Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, died on Sunday. He was 100 years old.

We should remember Jimmy Carter's character when considering dignity, integrity, and respect. During his presidency and long after, he embodied what it means to be a stand-up citizen and contribute to communities worldwide. His legacy lives on in the spirit of community action and diplomacy. Here are a few of his important accomplishments.
The Carter Center
Located in Atlanta, Georgia, the Carter Center was founded in 1982 to aid in the fight for public health worldwide, encourage peace, and advocate for human rights. One of the diseases the Carter Center virtually eradicated through its efforts was Guinea worm, a water-borne illness found in some African countries. He made several trips to the continent to assist in their efforts to eradicate it by providing clean drinking water and educating local populations, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). Not only did Carter's efforts improve a major public health crisis in these countries, but the eradication of Guinea worm positively impacted global health.

The Camp David Accords
During the ongoing Middle East conflict in the 1970s, Carter negotiated a pivotal treaty---the first one between Israel and any Arab country---that significantly reduced violent conflict in the region. The Camp David Accords, ratified in 1979, were spearheaded by Carter as a mediator between Israel and Egypt. His dedication to peace and diplomacy was evident in his approach to politics; even though the treaty was not sustained, there is much to learn from the grace and respect with which he resolved difficult and complex conflicts.
Habitat for Humanity and Affordable Housing

Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, were long-time volunteers at Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps people build, renovate, and repair homes while ensuring affordable housing. The organization has roots in over 70 countries, ensuring volunteers are at the core of their efforts. The Carters dedicated over 35 years to Habitat for Humanity, participating in building projects spanning from South Africa to New York. They advocated for housing as a human right, also shedding light on the difficulties and hurdles of the American housing system.
As we remember the legacy of Jimmy Carter, let's strive to act selflessly and make meaningful contributions to our communities and our planet. We when work together for a common goal, society as a whole will benefit in the long run. Always Be Mindful of your impact, Purposeful in what you do, and Positive in what you say.
