'I Am Not Your Negro': Highlighting the special guest from this week's Mindful Discussion

"I often wonder if I am the last of the people who knew him then." - Dwight "Skip" Stackhouse, referring to James Baldwin

On April 2, we highlighted James Baldwin's poignant documentary and book, I Am Not Your Negro. The works, both inspired by Baldwin's unfinished work Remember This House, navigate topics like the struggle of being Black in America, racial double standards, and the intersection of race and politics: especially relevant ideas in today's era. Baldwin discusses these through the lens of three prominent civil rights leaders: Malcom X, Medgar Evers, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A very special addition to our Mindful Discussion was Dwight "Skip" Stackhouse, a close friend and former administrative assistant of James Baldwin.

"Being in the presence of James Baldwin, up close living with him was one of the highlights of my life," Stackhouse said. "We traveled the country and abroad, I was with him when he lectured across the country at universities and assemblies."

The discussion featured Stackhouse reflecting on the fond memories he shared with Baldwin, their camaraderie and teamwork, and the profound intellect they have in common as writers and "Momma's Boys".

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Stackhouse is a storyteller who has published two books, writes romantic poetry, and is the winner of the 2018 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellowship Award. To you, Mr. Stackhouse, we give a special thanks for attending and sharing your anecdotes and wisdom!

I would love to see you at our next Mindful Discussions on Tuesday, May 7th; I promise you won't want to miss it!
